October 16-20, 2017
Reading
This week, students continued to work on reading intensely so that they could grow ideas about texts. Our main area of focus was on creating a movie in our mind as we read intensely, and students got to practice this skill during both read-a-loud, and independent reading. Mrs. Hauser also had an opportunity to conference with individual students, and set reading goals that reflect the work we are doing in class. Students should still be reading 30 minutes a night, and focusing on picking "just right" books.
Math
This week, students learned the concept of rounding in order to help them with estimation. Using a number line and their previous knowledge of place value, students visually represented how multi- digit numbers can be rounded to the nearest thousand, ten thousand, and hundred thousand form. Solving story problems, and working in small groups allowed for students to have a deeper understanding of their new skill.
Inquiry
Once students finished creating their artistic collage, they worked towards writing an artist statement that explained the values, culture, and communities that represented who they are. Students enjoyed being able to explain both their collage's and their artist statements to their classmates in a presentation, and were able to publish their thinking to Seesaw. After students reflected on the multiple ways in which these concepts make them unique individuals, we brainstormed ways in which we could represent our similarities and differences as a class.
Continent Club
Our first Continent Club check will be held on October 25, and this month students will be assessed on the European continent. Please note that Continent Club is an activity put on by parent volunteers, and class time will not be given to study. If you would like to access October's map, and see what continent you can study for next, please refer to the following website: http://wtvptc.org/continent-club/
