Math
This week, students were introduced to EGNY's Module 5 which focuses on Fractions! Students worked on building background knowledge by decomposing fractions as a sum of unit fractions, and using familiar strategies like tape diagrams and number bonds to show their thinking. f you feel like your child may need more work on strengthening these math concepts, please encourage them to use Dreambox at home.
Inquiry
This week, students began their new PYP unit, which is How We Organize Ourselves. During this unit we will focus on Government, and the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities. We will also work towards understanding the structure and function of organizations, as well as societal decision-making, and economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment. Our central idea targets how Community values influence leaders and impact decision making, and our three lines of inquiry are: How leadership is defined, Decision - making, and Ways power is shared.

Next week’s vocabulary test: Government
PSA Videos
Happy Thursday, and thank you to all of those who attended our PSA premiere yesterday afternoon. It was a great turn out, and the students absolutely loved sharing all of their hard work with you. For those of you that were unable to attend, I have shared your child’s video with them on their google drive accounts, and they should be able to log on, and show you at home using their [email protected] and special password. We’ll practice finding our videos sometime today, but should you need help, don’t hesitate to reach out!
Field Trip
I also wanted to update you on a few items that were sent home on Tuesday. On Thursday, February 28th, we will be taking a grade level field trip to the State Capital in Salem, Oregon. Buses will depart at 8:45am and we should return to school around 1:30pm. We will be meeting with Governor Brown, as well as getting a tour and having lunch. If you would like our cafeteria staff to prepare a sack lunch for your child, please mark the yellow paper sent home and have them return it with their blue permission slip as soon as possible. We will also be looking for parent volunteers to join us on our field trip. If you are interested, please make sure that you have passed our districts background check, and let me know if you would like to join by Monday, February 4th at 8:00am. Once I have a list of interested parents, I will draw names (if needed) and contact volunteers afterwards. We will be having a total of 4 field trips during the reminder of the school year, so if you cannot make it to this one, don’t worry-there will be others!
Homework
On February 5th, students will have their normal reading logs due, as well as a vocabulary test on government specific words. In addition, students were sent home with an assignment that is due next Tuesday, which focuses on how decisions are made within your household or community. Please look over the assignment with your child, and help them fill out the questionnaire. We will be sharing these rules on Wednesday, to help guide the inquiry for our new PYP unit which has the central idea that community values influence leaders and impact decision making.
Report Cards
On Monday, February 4th, your child will be sent home with their report card. It is important to remember that proficiency levels are based on end of year expectations, and receiving a nearly proficient score is completely reasonable for this time of year. It is also good to keep in mind that there are many subjects in which we have not yet taught, but will get to throughout the remainder of the school year. I also wanted to point out that there is a new technology standard that will appear under the behavior learning targets and focuses on engaging with technology in a safe and responsible manner. As always, if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to reach out.
Paved Path Project
Last year the West TV staff and parents came together through surveys and focus groups and determined overwhelmingly that funding our Paved Path Project was a community priority! This enthusiastic input shaped our goal of transforming our often-soggy bark chip path into a six-foot-wide paved path that is accessible to ALL students and community members. We need your support to make this goal a reality! Please purchase a pair of West TV spirit socks for $14.00 here.
Early Start
Beginning next fall, the 2019/2020 school year, our school start time will change to 8:00 am and release time will be at 2:35 pm. Please make a note of this important change for next school year.
