*Students had a great first week back from Winter Break. As a class, we set some new goals and routines, and once students have reviewed all our old procedures and expectations, they will be rewarded with a mystery prize!
Reading
This week, students took a short survey asking them about their current reading habits. Once they completed the questionnaire, each student conferenced with Mrs. Hauser to set a new reading goal for the month of January. As a whole, students have found that they would like to write more about their reading, so next week we will be given more time to practice this skill. Students also participated in a fun Kahoot! game about our reading routines and expectations, and are all set for the New Year.
Inquiry
This week, students had an opportunity to learn from an expert panel of individuals who taught them about natural disasters and the importance of being prepared. A huge thank you to Andrew Phelps, the Director of the Office of Oregon Emergence Management, Mike Mumaw, the Emergency Manager for the City of Beaverton, Ashley Vanderjagt, the Emergency Coordinator for Beaverton School District, and Mrs. McNamee our building Principal! It was amazing for our students to get such an authentic learning experience, and they will use this new knowledge in the coming weeks to prepare for their research paper and public service announcement video!
Math
This week, students began an inquiry math problem in which they reviewed strategies such as skip-counting, distributive property, and ratio tables. The students were told about a BIG DINNER that Mrs. Hauser will be planning for her family, and students used math to help her determine her shopping list and the prices of miscellaneous items. The main purpose of this elaborate story problem is for students to eventually review their previous multiplication knowledge, and show all the skills they've gained before winter break.
Next week’s math: Continue with The Big Dinner, Inquiry Unit
Next week’s vocabulary test: Greek Root Words
