January 29th- February 1st, 2018
Math
This week, students focused on preparing for their end of Module 3 unit assessment, which covered both multiplication, and division. On Wednesday, students took a practice test and were sent home with the answer key in order to help them study. Thursday was the actual test, and Mrs. Hauser was very pleased to see how many students showed perseverance throughout the assessment. *Please look for your students graded test in the coming week.
Inquiry
This week, students continued to work on their LED cards by using their knowledge of energy and circuits to make their cards light up with the help of copper tape, a battery, and an LED lightbulb (thank you to all of those who donated supplies in order to make this opportunity possible). Students were also fortunate enough to have two special visits from Mrs. Bailey, (our PYP coordinator) and Mrs. White, (a district TOSA-teacher on special assignment) to help us in our exploration of technology and our current PYP unit. Ms. Bailey introduced us to a coding website called SCRATCH, which allowed students to program characters to do things for them. Mrs. White introduced Makey-Makey's, and students used alligator clips, and their previous knowledge of Scratch to program their Names. *If you get a chance, ask your child how they were able to do this project!
Inquiry Homework
This week, students were introduced to our last line of inquiry which focuses on how design can be used to solve problems. In order for students to understand this concept, they were each asked to think about a problem that currently exists in their lives either at home or at school. Once they've established a problem, we ask that students then create and/or design a solution that can then be shared with their peers at our Innovation Fair on February 15th. All next week, students will be using their knowledge of energy, as well as Scratch and Makey Makey's to work on their creation. *Design Plans were handed out on Thursday, Feb. 1st, and are due this coming Tuesday-please reference the example on the back of your students assignments for questions!
