February 20-23
Writing
This week, students worked on an on-demand opinion writing assessment. They were asked to think of a topic or issue that they knew and cared a lot about, then they were to write a persuading or argumentative text stating a claim and giving reasons for their opinion. Students were directed to include an introduction, clearly state an opinion or claim, and give reasons and evidence to support it. They were also told to focus on organization, acknowledgment of their counterclaims, transition words, and a strong conclusion. This pre-assessment will be used in determining how Mrs. Hauser will spend the next few months teaching opinion writing, and is a great starting point for each student to show progress towards their writing goals.
Math
This week, students were introduced to EGNY's Module 5 which focuses on Fractions! Students worked on building background knowledge by decomposing fractions as a sum of unit fractions, and using familiar strategies like tape diagrams and number bonds to show their thinking. With their knowledge of fraction vocabulary, and their recent growth in multiplication and division, it's sure to be a fun unit! If you feel like your child may need more work on strengthening these math concepts, please encourage them to use Dreambox at home.
Inquiry
This week, students began their new PYP unit, which is How We Organize Ourselves. During this unit we will focus on Government, and the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities. We will also work towards understanding the structure and function of organizations, as well as societal decision-making, and economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment. Our central idea targets how Community values influence leaders and impact decision making, and our three lines of inquiry are How leadership is defined, Decision - making, and Ways power is shared.
