Reading
This week, most students have completed reading their historical fiction book club book. OSAS testing has made this accomplishment a bit more challenging, but students have persevered through the schedule changes and were still able to finish their book during the time frame provided. Next week, Mrs. Hauser will be meeting with each group for a final check in and reflection. Don't forget to ask your child what their favorite part of their book was, and how the historical events played a role in their stories!
Math
This week, students were introduced to the metric system. We completed 5 measurement lessons and students worked on learning the different prefixes to teach them the value of each amount. While although students are more familiar with customary measurement, learning the metric system may be easier because it works with base 10 increments. Students focused on making conversions for length, weight, and capacity and used Seesaw as an opportunity to review some of the many different topics we covered this year in 4th grade.
Field Trip
As part of our inquiry we will be taking a field trip to the Cedar Mill Wetlands on Monday, June 3rd. This location is off Barnes Rd. just before NW 118th. The students will be leaving West TV at 12:20 and we expect to arrive at our destination within ten minutes. We will head back to the school at 2:00 and expect to arrive back by 2:10. During this field trip students will be going to different stations to test water quality, look for indicators of a healthy watershed, and make observations. We are asking for at least eight volunteers to help at the stations. We will have volunteer training the Thursday before the trip, 5/30 at 3:30. In order to volunteer you will need to attend the training on 5/30, have a completed background check through the office, and be able to provide your own transportation to the field trip location. Please let me know if you are interested in volunteering for this field trip.
Next week’s math: Math Review and Module 7- Customary Measurement: Lessons 1-4
Next week’s vocabulary test: Metric System
State Testing
This coming Tuesday officially marks the second week of OSAS testing for our students, and I am still so excited to continue this journey with them. They have been working hard all year long, and I know each student's efforts will be seen through their knowledge and perseverance! Above all else, it is so important that parents support their children at home by checking in, encouraging, and preparing them to be successful. Being well rested, and establishing healthy eating habits are just some of the many tips you can help your child with. PBS has written an article giving other important test taking advice, should you choose to check it out. Last, but certainly not least, here is a tentative schedule of our remaining testing dates and times to keep you better informed... as always, should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask!
