April 30-May the 4 (be with you!)
Math
This week, students had a down and dirty introduction to decimals! We used our knowledge of fractions and mixed numbers to represent both tenths and hundredths, as well as visuals like number lines, area models, and number disks to show our thinking. Students are now able to find the unit, fraction, and decimal form of a number, and can compare whether it is greater than, less than, or equal to another number. At the end of the week, students were able to convert any number to decimal form, and apply their new knowledge to story problems, and money.
Inquiry/Writing
This week, students began the planning process of making their Public Service Announcement. On Monday, students were put into their natural disaster groups, and had the task of reviewing all their research, and determining what was most important to share. Students then visualized what their PSA was going to look like by drawing a story board that briefly described their 2 minute video. Groups ended the week by collaboratively writing their scripts, and then began rehearsing...next week, students will begin filming their videos with the use of a Green Screen, and the iPad App Touch Cast Studios.
SBAC Testing
This Tuesday officially marked the first day of SBAC testing for our students, and I was so excited to begin this journey with them. We have been working hard all year long, and I know their efforts will be seen through their knowledge and perseverance! Above all else, it is so important that parents support their children at home by checking in, encouraging, and preparing them to be successful. Being well rested, and establishing healthy eating habits are just some of the many tips you can help your child with. PBS has written an article giving other important test taking advice, should you choose to check it out. Last, but certainly not least, here is a tentative schedule of our remaining testing dates and times to keep you better informed... as always, should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask!
