Writing
This week, students had an opportunity to publish their last informational papers of the school year, and share them with their peers in a writing celebration. Students toasted each others hard work with apple cider, and enjoyed circling the classroom and learning about migration stories other than their own. Students also had an opportunity to reflect on the writing they have accomplished this school year and each student has chosen to write one last final paper of the school year. Students were able to select either a narrative or opinion piece that they would like to work on, and many students revisited papers that they began working on during Wednesday's choice creative writing time.
Math
This week, students began a brand new math module consisting of Customary units. Having had previous knowledge of last week's work with the metric system, students jumped right in and began learning the conversion process. Luckily for us, we use customary units in the United States, so many students were familiar with the length (yards, feet, inches), weight (ounces, pounds, tons), capacity (gallons, quarts, pints, and cups) and time (weeks, days, hours, minutes and seconds) measurements. Students also really enjoyed watching Number Rocks videos/songs on youtube to help them memorize the conversions. Module 7 will be our last concept of the school year, so the more practice students can get outside the classroom with these ideas, the better!
Wooden Nickel Celebration
This Friday, students had a compliments celebration and chose to have an extra recess and popsicle party! In order to have this celebration, students must earn 10 wooden nickels rewarded to them by staff members other than Mrs. Hauser because of their good behavior. This could be anything from walking down the hall quietly, to good lunch room behavior or an outstanding specials class period. Due to Friday's unexpected weather, the class made a last minute decision to vote on an indoor recess party, instead of outdoor, which of course won! Our hope is to earn one more wooden nickel celebration before the school year comes to an end, but that will all be dependent on the class, of course.
Field Trip
As part of our inquiry we will be taking a field trip to the Cedar Mill Wetlands on Monday, June 3rd. This location is off Barnes Rd. just before NW 118th. The students will be leaving West TV at 12:20 and we expect to arrive at our destination within ten minutes. We will head back to the school at 2:00 and expect to arrive back by 2:10. During this field trip students will be going to different stations to test water quality, look for indicators of a healthy watershed, and make observations. We are asking for at least eight volunteers to help at the stations. We will have volunteer training the Thursday before the trip, 5/30 at 3:30. In order to volunteer you will need to attend the training on 5/30, have a completed background check through the office, and be able to provide your own transportation to the field trip location. Please let me know if you are interested in volunteering for this field trip.
Next week’s math: Customary Measurement: Lessons 6-9
Next week’s vocabulary test: Customary System
State Testing
This coming Wednesday officially marks the last week of OSAS testing for our students, and I am still so excited to continue this journey with them. They have been working hard all year long, especially in the last three weeks, and I know each student's efforts will be seen through their knowledge and perseverance! Above all else, it is so important that parents continue to support their children at home by checking in, encouraging, and preparing them to be successful. Being well rested, and establishing healthy eating habits are just some of the many tips you can continue to help your child with. Last, but certainly not least, here is a tentative schedule of our remaining testing dates and times to keep you better informed... as always, should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask!
5/29- Math PT 10:20am, 5/30- Math PT 10:20am, 5/31- Math PT 10:20am
*Due to Memorial Day, students will begin testing on Wednesday, May 29th, not Tuesday, May 28th.
