Reading
This week, students began a new reading unit in which we will focus on Non-fiction reading. The first thing we did to explore the unit was familiarize ourselves with the many different types of non-fiction reading we do in our lives. Whether it's by reading a textbook, recipe, street sign, or set of instructions, students encounter many forms of NF texts throughout their day, and it's important for them to recognize this. We also went over the five different types of text structures found within NF text (description, cause/effect, problem/solution, compare/contrast and chronological) and worked on identifying these formats in our own reading.
Inquiry
This week, students began their new PYP unit which focuses on How The World Works. During the next few weeks, we will look at how people use scientific knowledge to respond to a changing Earth, and more specifically, explore the topic of natural disasters. This unit will be an inquiry into the causes of global change, human responses to change, and finally, how we take action. During our first week, students had a provocation in which they explored the contents of an emergency backpack and began gathering background information on the multiple types of events that cause the Earth to change.
Math
This week, students continued to work on their understanding of long division and the standard algorithm, and moved from dividing two digit numbers, all the way up to three and four digit numbers. Continuing to practice this skill at home will only further your child's success in the concept, so I highly encourage as much repetition of the steps as possible (divide, multiple, and subtract, bring it on down, and bring it on back). Students were also introduced to prime and composite numbers and learned the difference between the two, so be sure to ask them at home!
Next week’s math: Lessons 30-34
Next week’s vocabulary test: Non-fiction Text Features
Auction Art Request
Hello Mrs. Hauser Parents,
Every year each WTV class creates an art project that is then sold at the spring auction as a school fund raiser. Currently there is no parent available to take lead on this project for your classroom. There are at least two members that are available in January to assist, but would prefer another parent volunteer take the lead on the project. This is a great opportunity to interact with your child's classmates and have some art fun at the same time. As the coordinator for the classroom art projects, I can provide ideas, some resources and answer questions. Please let Mrs. Hauser know if you are interested and she can forward your contact info to me. Thank you, Drinda Battaile (1st and 3rd Grade Parent)
