Reading
Last week, students took a short survey asking them about their current reading habits, and this week students put some of their new reading goals into action. We started the week by having students review our guided reading questions, and everyone has agreed to select and highlight a number of questions each week to answer. We are also going to commit to meeting with our reading partners more regularly to chat about our books. In order to do this, we practiced the skill of summarizing to help us inform our reading partners about the books we are reading.
Writing/Inquiry
This week, students worked on gathering information to prepare for their writing assignment. Each student chose a natural disaster (earthquakes, tsunamis, wildfires, landslides/avalanches and volcanoes) to research and at the end of the week, they wrote a book using google slides. Their informational text turned out great, and it was a good way for everyone to practice using our knowledge of non-fiction text features. Next week, students will use their new found research to film a group Public Service Announcement where they focus on warning signs, examples from the past, and ways to be prepared.
Math
This week, students began their second math inquiry problem in which they reviewed strategies involving division. The students were told about a problem facing West TV staff in our Teachers Lounge, in which we are currently debating whether or not to keep our vending machine. Students are determining sizing, quantities, and pricing dependent on the type of machine, and helping us determine if its all worth the cost. The main purpose of this elaborate story problem is for students to review their previous division knowledge, and show all the skills they've gained before winter break.
Next week’s math: The Teachers Lounge, Inquiry Unit
Next week’s vocabulary test: Latin Root Words
