Writing
This week, students continued working on their opinion papers about a topic of their choosing. To end our PYP government unit, students were asked to think of a topic that they care about, and persuade others to take action in helping the cause. Papers will be due next Friday, before we all head into Spring Break, so make sure you have checked in with your child, and ask them how their progress is going.
Math
This week, students continued working on fractions and now have a better understanding of how to multiply mixed numbers. We have been completing mini assignments on Seesaw, where students have shown their thinking in both simple number sentences and word problems. Hopefully you have had an opportunity to look at some of your child's work, and see how they are progressing. Next week, we will take the end of module math test, and students will end the week by working on a fractions inquiry problem.
Inquiry
This week, students began their new inquiry unit of Where We Are in Place and Time, with the central idea that Migration impacts individuals and communities. In order for students to have a better understanding of Migration, we took this week to focus on learning about Lewis and Clark, and the Corps of Discovery. Students made some predictions based on a map they saw of North America in 1803, and we watched a video outlining their exploration. Next week, we will continue to learn about Lewis and Clarks journey, as well as investigate westward expansion and the Oregon Trail.
Next week’s math: EGNY Module 5 Fractions prep/test/review
Next week’s vocabulary test: None
Field Trip
This week, students were sent home with another permission slip for our upcoming field trip. On Tuesday, April 9th, we will be departing for Philip Foster Farms at 9:00am, and returning around 2:00pm. 4th graders just started an inquiry unit under the theme of where we are in place and time. The central idea of the unit is migration impacts individuals and communities. In this unit students will study different examples of migration. We will first use westward expansion as a case study. To further investigate our case study we will take a field trip to Philip Foster Farms, where students will be able to engage in a real life pioneer experience. We will be away from school during snack and lunch, so each child will need to bring a snack, lunch, and water bottle with them. Students may order a sack lunch from the school cafeteria. Please indicate below whether your student will be bringing their own lunch or needing a school lunch. Chaperones will also need to bring their own lunch. This will an outdoor experience. We will be on our feet the whole time. Please make sure your student is dressed accordingly. Each class can bring six chaperones. We are asking chaperones to cover their admission for the trip, which is $5. If you are interested in joining on the trip let your child’s teacher know by Friday, March 22nd. If there are more volunteers than available spots we will draw names to determine who will go on the trip. Please note that in order to join us on the trip you will need to have completed a background check through the office.
