Math
This week, students began working on our first math unit, which focuses on place value. Students participated in an inquiry based lesson in which they were asked to complete multiple tasks for a puzzle packing company. Next week, students will begin to use their knowledge of place value to compare numbers and determine if they are greater than, less than, or equal to one another.
Writing
This week, students continued working on their realistic fiction stories by focusing on character development. Students were encouraged to think deeply about who their characters were, and what type of characteristics they would have both on the inside and outside. Our goal was to determine our characters deepest desires, and share that information throughout our stories without directly telling our readers what they were. Students thought about their characters wants, motivations, worries, treasures, and rituals all in order to develop who they were, and what role they took on in our stories.
Inquiry
This week, students continued working on our PYP unit of inquiry: Who We Are. Our main area of focus this week was on values, as students presented their most recent homework assignment, which asked them to reflect on their family values. Students brought in photographs of importance, and shared with the class how their picture represented one of their many values. Students shared everything from family to kindness. We also watch a short documentary about a young boy named Caine, who started an arcade in his fathers automobile shop, and then discussed all the things he valued like creativity, community, and fun.
All Star Fun Run
This coming Tuesday, 4th grade students will be participating in the All Star Fun Run. Students will be given yellow t-shirts the morning of the run to show their school spirit, but please also make sure that your child comes to school prepared with comfortable running shoes and a water bottle. The race will take place on Catlin Gabel's track from 9:00-9:45am, and this year students are being encouraged to participate with individual and whole class incentives.
