April 15- April 26
Reading
This week, students began their historical fiction book clubs with their peers. Each small group was given the option of two books to choose from, and they all had to agree upon one choice as a team of readers. Once students selected their stories, they created a set of book club agreements that they all signed, and committed to follow. Students also created a joint calendar that would outline the groups reading schedule for the next few weeks. Each group is responsible for meeting multiple times a week, and discussing the book that they are currently reading.
Math
This week, student’s continued working on module 6, which focuses on decimals. Students continued completing Seesaw assignments that reflected their learning and showcased their proficiency levels. As a 4th grade team, it was decided that moving forward, there will no longer be end of module exams, and instead teachers would grade the Seesaw assignments based on the standards each student is working towards meeting.
Inquiry
This week, students continued learning about numerous migration stories of the past including but not limited to, Angel Island, The Dust Bowl, and Japanese Interment. We also had the pleasure of welcoming Mina Nguyen-Driver into our classroom, as she shared her incredible migration history with each of us, that described her families refugee story from Vietnam in the 1970s. Reading immigrants stories, and watching video clips has been very insightful for our students, but to hear a first account experience like that of Mina's, is a once in a lifetime opportunity. If you would like to learn more, I encourage you to check out her story.
Next week’s math: Module 6- Decimals: Lessons 5-16
Next week’s vocabulary test: Refugee
Field Trip
Fourth Grade is scheduled for a field trip to the Clean Water Festival on Tuesday, April 30th. We will depart from school at 8:50 am and return at about 2:15 pm. 4th graders across the State have been invited to participate in Oregon’s Clean Water Festival that will be held at PCC’s Sylvania campus. In May, students will begin a PYP unit under the transdisciplinary theme of Sharing the Planet. The central idea for this unit is that natural resources have a structure and function within a community. This will be a great provocation for our upcoming unit! We will be away from school during snack and lunch, so each child will need to bring a snack, lunch, and water bottle with them. Students may order a sack lunch from the school cafeteria. Please indicate below whether your student will be bringing their own lunch or needing a school lunch. Chaperones will also need to bring their own lunch. Each class can bring EIGHT chaperones. If you are interested in joining on the trip let your child’s teacher know by Friday, April 19th. If there are more volunteers than available spots we will draw names to determine who will go on the trip. Please note that in order to join us on the trip you will need to have completed a background check through the office.
Parent Teacher Conferences
Thank you so much to everyone who was able to make it for parent/teacher conferences. I had a wonderful time catching up with each and everyone of you, and I am so proud of all that your child has accomplished thus far in 4th grade. It is going to be an exciting Spring, and we still have so much to learn. If you have any questions or concerns along the way, please do not hesitate to reach out.
