Reading
This week, students continued to work with their book club members to achieve the goal of completing their books by next week. Students read multiple chapters, met with their groups to discuss what they read, and wrote about their reading by answering guided reading questions. Next week, students will be given a variety of different book report options to show their understanding. This will be an individual project, but students can always confer with their book club members.
Math
This week, students continued working on fractions by adding and subtracting with like denominators, by using a variety of different strategies. The class has also been working hard to achieve some recent technology goals, and if each student completes five or more Dreambox lessons by the end of the week, then on Friday they can use their math technology time to play Prodigy. This incentive seems to be working, and students are very focused and drive to complete their problem sets each day, so they can eventually get to their differentiated technology.
Inquiry
This week, students continued working on our new PYP unit, which is How We Organize Ourselves. Our central idea targets how community values influence leaders and impact decision making, and students took a look at the Oregon Bottle Bill as a case study. Through this example, students were able to understand how Richard Chambers made an impact on his community (with the help of Governor Tim McCall), and together they were able to improve the future for all Oregonians. Next week, students will begin the process in which they write their own bills, based on matters that concern, and their values. Students will do this both individually, and on a class committee.

Paved Path Project
Last year the West TV staff and parents came together through surveys and focus groups and determined overwhelmingly that funding our Paved Path Project was a community priority! This enthusiastic input shaped our goal of transforming our often-soggy bark chip path into a six-foot-wide paved path that is accessible to ALL students and community members. We need your support to make this goal a reality! Please purchase a pair of West TV spirit socks for $14.00 here.
