Math
This week, students revisited division by learning how to divide by three and four digit numbers. We started the week by having students practice this method by drawing place value disks on a chart, and eventually ended by going back to the standard algorithm. When solving a division problem it's always important to remember our rap (divide, multiply, and subtract, bring it on down, and bring it on back), and then to follow up on our answers by checking our work with multiplication.
Inquiry
This week, students continued working on their exploration of M.E.L.T.S (Mechanical, Electrical, Light, Thermal, and Sound) Energy. With an emphasis on thermal and sound energy, students conducted two experiments where they wrote hypotheses, and gathered observations. The experiments consisted of watching how heat transfer throughout water temperatures, and determining which materials created the best vibrations for telephones made out of 2 cups and a piece of strong. Students ended the week on a playful note, by participating in a M.E.L.T.S picture sort, and a friendly game of energy charades.
Art Lit
This week, students learned about artist John Constable. Constable was an English painter, best know for his use of watercolors that featured a variety of warm and cold colors used while painting landscapes. Students took part in creating their very own masterpieces, and their art was sent home earlier in the week to be enjoyed by all.
