February 12-16
Math
This week, students were introduced to fractions by using story problems and inquiry. Each day students were given a new task in which they had to use different strategies in order to explore what the question was asking. Students frequently met as a group, and participated in math congresses where they observed the multiple ways in which a problem could be solved. Next week, students will begin a new module unit which focuses on specific fraction lessons.
Inquiry
This week, students participated in our first annual Innovation Fair, and it was a great way to show off everything students had learned during our How We Express Ourselves PYP unit. Students were faced with the task of identifying a problem in their lives, and then they were asked to create a solution by either building a prototype or drawing a diagram to explain their innovation. Students had a great time using Scratch (a coding website) and a Makey Makey to share their thinking with their peers. It was a very successful event, and we are extremely proud of all our risk-taking students for participating!
Holiday Celebrations
This week, students had a great time celebrating their last holiday celebration of the school year, with the success of another class party. Students participated in the Valentine's Day party by making cards, decorating cookies, and building coupon books and catapults. We'd all like to send a special thank you to Lori, our classroom party coordinator, as well as all the wonderful parent volunteers who helped make our last class party a success.
Parent Teacher Conferences
This Spring, Parent/Teacher conferences are held on March 7th and 8th. For your convenience, we will be scheduling conferences through a website called PTCfast, please let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to chatting with each and every one of you! https://www.ptcfast.com/schools/West_Tualatin_View_Elementary
Innovation Expo
West TV fourth and fifth grade teachers are excited to announce that we will be showcasing some of our technology innovations at a District Wide Expo on March 21 from 5 - 8 at Aloha High School. You can watch an introductory video here: http://www.bsdexpo.com/ We have asked 4 student volunteers from each grade level to attend, but everyone is welcome! This will be an opportunity for students to share how we developed our technology skills while learning about science and engineering units. Fourth grade students will be sharing their Makey Makey projects, and fifth grade students will be sharing their insights with the Sphero Mars rover. At this time, we are also raising funds in order to purchase some of the equipment we will need. To date, we have had to checkout the equipment from the district. We would love to have the chance to own our own class sets, however.
