Reading
This week, the class finished their very first read aloud story, Wonder. To celebrate, students focused on the theme of kindness, and researched their very own precepts that they shared with their classmates. Next week, we will begin reading Tuck Everlasting and students will have an opportunity to explore fantasy as a genre and the concept of immortality.
Math
This week, students began our brand new math module which focuses on multiplication and division. Students were introduced to a new website called Xtra Math (that can be found under our resources page). Kids can log on and practice their basic math facts at their own pace so that they can become prepared for when they begin multiplying and dividing up to four digits at a time. We also began the concept of multiplication by reviewing area and perimeter, and students spent the week practicing each formula with the help of visuals, and standard algorithm.
Inquiry
This week, students were introduced to the acronym MELTS, which standards for the five most commonly used forms of energy: Mechanical, Electrical, Light, Thermal, and Sound. To be exploration of the first type of energy, students read about potential and kinetic energy that can be formed when creating mechanical energy. They also had an opportunity to build catapults using popsicle sticks and rubber bands. Next week, we will explore the four other types of energy through reading and experimental exploration.
Next week’s math: EGNY Module 3- Lessons 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10
Next week’s vocabulary test: Energy
Halloween Party
