June 4-8
Writing
This week students began their very last writing unit which focuses on poetry. In order to build upon their unique writing skills, students revisited figurative language, and had fun practicing alliterations, similes, and metaphors. Students now have knowledge of writing limerick, haiku, and acrostic poems, and will use this knowledge to write their own poem next week based on what they find during our field trip to the local wetlands.
Math
This week students finished up some final math assessments and celebrated by being introduced to an online math curriculum called prodigy. Students are loving this program so far because its differentiated math instruction that's presented in a video game format. Student accounts will be available over the Summer, so please encourage your child to continue using the program by finding the link under our resources page.
Inquiry
This week, students built their own wetland habitats by using the iPad App, Bloxels. Bloxels is a creative and inventive technology program which allowed for students to build their own video games, and in this particular case it their platform was a watershed. Students also had a great time preparing for next weeks field trip by doing a hula hoop transect activity and a water testing sample, that they will both practice at their local Cedar Mills wetlands..
Field Trip
As part of our inquiry we will be taking a field trip to the Cedar Mill Wetlands on Tuesday, June 12th. This location is off Barnes Rd. just before NW 118th. The students will be leaving West TV at 12:20pm and we expect to arrive at our destination within ten minutes. We will head back to the school around 1:45pm. During this field trip students will be going to different stations to test water quality, look for indicators of a healthy watershed, and make observations. We are asking for at least eight volunteers to help at the stations. We will have volunteer training the Friday before the trip, 6/8 at 3:30pm. In order to volunteer you will need to attend the training on 6/8, have a completed background check through the office, and be able to provide your own transportation to the field trip location. Please let me know if you are interested in volunteering for this field trip no later than Tuesday, June 5th.
