Reading
This week, students began working on their book reports for the book club book they just completed with their classmates. Each student has chosen a unique form for representing their comprehension of their book. Students were given the option to decide how they would like to present their knowledge and some students have decided to make a diorama, while others will be filming a book trailer using green screen technology, or creating a board game. Next week, we will have a grade level gallery walk, in which students will be able to see their peers work from all three classes, and then decide which book they would like to read next.
Math
This week, students continued working on fractions in preparation for their Mid-Module Assessment, which will take place on Monday, February 25th. Students spent a majority of the week adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators. They also worked on fraction story problems in which they revisited the method of reading the problem, drawing a visual to accompany their thinking, and writing out their answers in a complete sentence. Next weeks test will cover converting fractions, comparing fractions, and adding and subtracting fractions. Students will be asked to use strategies such as tape diagrams, number lines, number bonds, and converting improper fractions to mixed numbers.
Inquiry
This week, students continued working on our new PYP unit, which is How We Organize Ourselves. Our central idea targets how community values influence leaders and impact decision making, and this week, students selected the committees in which they would like to work with during our legislative branch reenactment. Next week, students will form the following committees (Technology, Environment, Rules, Culture, Health & Safety, and infrastructure), in which they will be writing class bills, that will then be voted upon by our classroom senators and representatives, and potentially turned into class laws.
Next week’s math: EGNY Module 5 Lessons 22-25
Next week’s vocabulary test: Prefixes
Field Trip
Next Thursday (February 28th), we leave for our very first field trip to the Oregon State Capitol. Buses will be departing at 8:45am, so please make sure that your child is at school on time that day, and ready to go with their sack lunch. Once we arrive in Salem, we will be meeting with Governor Brown, and then taking a tour of the Capitol building, followed by a quick lunch before our departure. We are scheduled to arrive back at West TV around 1:30pm. The Capitol building in currently in long session, and it promises to be a very eventful day, so be sure to ask your child about the trip!
