October 21-25
Reading
This week students continued reading realistic fiction, so they could grow ideas about characters and determine the theme of a story once done reading. We also spent some time reviewing the types of books we're choosing in class, so please check in with your child and make sure they have chosen a book that allows them to interpret these ideas and make important claims. The most important thing that we talked about this week is how readers need to find evidence within their stories to support such claims, and we used the acronym F.R.E.D to help support these ideas. F.R.E.D stands for facts, reasons, examples, and details, as you and your child complete this weeks book chat before reading logs are due on Tuesday, please ask them to support their answers with F.R.E.D.
Math
This week, students wrapped up their first math unit covering place value. We spent a lot of time solving multi-step story problems using the standard algorithm for addition and subtraction and even reviewed number form, comparing using >,<, = and rounding. Students completed two Seesaw activities covering all these concepts and giving me one last opportunity to check for their understanding. Next week, we move on to the metric system and will spend a few weeks working on measurement!
Inquiry
This week, students learned about energy and investigated the acronym M.E.L.T.S which stands for mechanical, electrical, light, thermal, and sound. We spent time building catapults, getting batteries to work, exploring with flashlights, determining the difference between convection, conduction and radiation, and making paper cup telephones. Next week, students will use all their new gained knowledge to build a LED card that incorporates almost all of the M.E.L.T.S energies.
Halloween Party
Next week, we will have our Halloween party from 1:30-2:30 pm on October 31st. Thanks to our wonderful parent volunteers, students can look forward to an afternoon of snacks, crafts, and games! After lunch, students may change into their costumes for the remainder of the day as long as they follow some safe school guidelines. Costumes must be worn over their school clothes, not include masks, make up or inappropriate props and or weapons, and be put on by themselves without the assistance of the teacher. We look forward to a fun afternoon of celebrating!
Last Week at Timberland
Next week is scheduled to be our last week at Timberland! We have enjoyed our time spent with ACMA, and are grateful for all the hard work that has been done to our home school, but I think everyone is eager to get back to West TV. Here are a few things we're looking forward to having once we return: a play structure at recess, sinks in our classrooms, not having to walk up and down so many stairs, closer bathrooms, and a specials and lunch schedule that stays the same each day!
Parent/Teacher Conferences
Fall conferences will be held on the evening of November 6th and all day November 7th. If you have not yet signed up for a parent/teacher conference please do so using the PTCfast link below. I look forward to chatting with each and every one of you about your child's progress in 4th grade.
