November 18-22
Reading
This week, students reflected on their very first read aloud of the school year, which was Wonder by R.J. Palacio. Students watched the movie the previous Friday, and had to compare and contrast the two using a Venn Diagram on Seesaw. Students also had to include which they preferred more (the book or the movie) and why. It was an obvious choice for many who enjoyed listening to the rich detail the book included, but watching the movie was a fun way to wrap things up, and a great way to celebrate the end of one thing before starting a new. Speaking of, this week we began our second read which falls under the genre of fantasy and will be read aloud well into the new year, it is A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle!
Inquiry
This week, students spent numerous hours and loads of energy on their most recent inquiry projects, and our 3rd annual Innovation Fair went off without a hitch. Thank you so much to all the family members that joined us for our event Thursday afternoon in the cafeteria. Students loved being about to share their creative sides with on-lookers and beamed after getting to explain their problem and solution to guests. Next week, we will begin out How the World Works inquiry unit, in which we will spend the remainder of Winter learning about Natural Disasters and how we can respond to a constantly changing earth.
Library Cards
Today, your child came home with their very own library card given to them by Washington County Library services. Students can now have access to check out books at multiple libraries across the Portland Metro area, as well as audiobooks, and numerous other resources. Mrs. Van Kleek, our school librarian will be teaching kids how to use their cards in class and if your child did not come home with an envelope including more information, it's because they already have their own library card. Happy Reading!
Homework
Please note that over the Thanksgiving holiday break, students will not be coming home with a new list of vocabulary words to study from. However, they will still have a reading log due Tuesday morning, upon their return to school. Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate and be surrounded by loved ones, enjoy your time together!
