October 7-10
Reading
This week students practiced the skill of the stop and jot while they read. The best way to show comprehension about our reading is to write about it, so students learned different symbols they can use during reading time to stop and jot down some of their thinking along they way. Some important notes students may want to write about as they read are making a connection, mentioning their favorite part, sharing something new and surprising, asking a question, finding an important word, or stating a key fact or detail. If possible, encourage your child to take part in stop and jots as they read at home, it will only help improve their understanding.
Writing
This week students continued working on their realistic fiction stories and practiced the skill of introductions and conclusions. As a class, we discussed the importance of hooking your readers attention at the very beginning of a story. Students learned that they could do this by asking a question, describing the setting or sharing a fact, blurting an onomatopoeia or using dialogue or by being funny. We also focused our attention on clever conclusions that wrap up all unanswered questions for the reader and do so by sharing a feeling, asking a question, teaching a lesson or giving advice, or by leaving them with a cliffhanger that leaves them wanting more.
Math
This week, students continued to use their knowledge of place value to help them focus on rounding. Hopefully you've had a chance to glance at your child's exit tickets on Seesaw and see how they're doing in class. Students learned to round to the nearest thousand, ten thousand, and hundred thousand and use the trick of 0-4, round down and 5-9 round up. Rounding happens to be one of the more difficult concepts that we cover during this first math unit, so if you notice that your child may need more practice, please let me know how I can support that work in class and at home.
Inquiry
This week, students complied all the knowledge they've gained throughout our Who We Are inquiry unit and used it to create a piece of art representing their values, culture, and community. Students also had to choose a PYP learner profile trait that best described them, and included it in their collages. Using only paper, students created literal and symbolic images to represent themselves and on Thursday, we had a gallery walk with Mr. Blanc's class in which everyone got to showcase their amazing creations.
Buddies
This week, students finally got to meet their first grade buddies from Mrs. Brock's class. They spent Thursday afternoon getting to know one another better by making a Venn Diagram and by playing together at recess. Our hope this school year is to meet with our little buddies at least once per month to partake in fun and festive activities together. Ask your 4th grader about their new buddy by having them share something similar and different that they learned during their time together!
