Math
This week, students continued working on their place value unit in which they focused on greater than, less than, or equal to, as well as rounding, and plotting numbers (up to the million) on a number line. Students also took their mid-module assessment on Friday in which they had to show their understanding of the current math concept. Students tests will be graded and sent home as soon as possible.
Writing
This week, students continued working on their realistic fiction stories by focusing on story leads. Students were encouraged to think deeply about the first few sentences of their story and how important it is to hook their readers attention right from the get go. Students were taught about the six different types of story leads one could have at the beginning of their stories, and they chose amongst dialogue, sound effects, asking a question, action descriptions, snapshots of a small moment, and flashbacks of past events.
Inquiry
This week, students continued working on our PYP unit of inquiry: Who We Are. Now that students have a good understanding of their values, culture, and community, their job was to create a visual representation of their findings. All week, students participated in build a collage that showed each part of who they were as individuals. Students learned the difference between a literal and symbolic image and could not have any white space on their collages. Next week, we will ban together as a class and come up with actions that we want to share with our classmates that show our values, culture and community, we will also go over how these representations impact our classroom.
Parent/Teacher Conferences
This Fall, Parent/Teacher conferences are held on October 24th-26th. For your convenience, we will be signing up for conferences through a website called PTCfast, and as soon as our class schedule is ready, I will be emailing everyone. Please let me know if you have any questions, and I look forward to chatting with each and every one of you!
