November 12-15
Reading/Writing
Our next area of focus for the upcoming months will be informational reading and writing. After Thanksgiving break, students will be introduced to a number of different skills and strategies that will help them while they read and write using informational text from numerous resources. A great way to get students excited about this new concept is if you ask them what they like to learn and then go from there!
Inquiry
On Thursday, students were sent home with more information regarding our 3rd annual Innovation Fair. This will be the last activity students participate in during their How We Express Ourselves inquiry unit which had the central idea that people innovate using creativity and knowledge of energy. Next Thursday, November 21st the Innovation Fair will take place from 1:40-2:20 in the West TV library, and students will be presenting their innovations. Students were asked to complete a design map in which they identified a problem in their lives and had to come up with a creative solution that incorporated some form of our MELTS (mechanical, electrical, light, thermal and sound) energy. Students have access to Chromebooks, Micro:bits and basic school supplies, but if there is anything else they need to be successful next week, please send them to school with their materials on Monday.
Continent Club
Next week, students have their very first Continent Club check. After being away at Timberland, it was decided that things would be postponed until our return to West TV, and now that we're finally back so are the check ups. Continent club is put on outside the classroom and run by our wonderful PTC, but all students will take place in this fun and educational geographic hunt. The month of November's focus will be North America, and students can find the affiliated paperwork under our resources page on our class website.
Wooden Nickel Party
Next Friday, November 22nd the class will be participating in a wooden nickel party in which they have earned a celebration for good behavior while at school. Students voted once we earned our 10 wooden nickel goal, and Friday's event will be a technology party. During the last hour of the day, students can pull out their own devices and play as they see fit. Please be on the lookout for a permission slip that was sent home and needs to be signed. Students are invited to bring their own device at their own risk, but are also aware that their Chromebook's will be made available during this time as well.
OBOB
This January, students are invited to participate in the Oregon Battle of the Books, which is a friendly reading competition that takes place amongst third, fourth and fifth graders at West TV. Elementary students from all across the State have been preparing for these competitions by reading this years list of 17 chapter books. Students who would like to participate are now encouraged to start forming teams of 4-5 classmates and begin reading. Each week students will compete against one another in a jeopardy style game in which they answer questions from this years books, eventually recognizing one team from our school that will head to the State competition. We share this information with families now, because if your child would like to participate, now is a great time to have them begin forming teams and dividing and conquering the list of books provided. If you have any questions regarding OBOB, please feel free to reach out to our school Librarian, Mrs. Van Kleek.
