December 9-13
Reading/Writing
This week, students continued to work with non-fiction texts and determined the difference between looking at a book through a narrative or expository lens. Most students found that it was much easier to use informational text when reading and looking for specific subtopics within a topic, and students had an opportunity to practice this skill while researching a topic of their choosing. Students also spent some time focusing on the importance of elaboration in their writing and why it's important to answer questions like so what, and who cares?
Math
This week, students were taught the difference between a prime and composite numbers, and had an opportunity to find as many factors as possible given a specific number. Students continued working through divisibility strategies while working with the Number Detective curriculum and determined the similarities and differences between square and cube numbers.
Inquiry
This week, students continued learning about natural disasters as we read articles and participated in hands on activities that focused Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Volcanoes, Wildfires, and Avalanches/Landslides. Students favorite activities consisted of Mystery Science where they got to plot Volcanoes on the Ring of Fire and determine the layout of a safety plan if living in an area that was prone to landslides. We finished the week by visiting https://smokeybear.com/en/smokey-for-kids and learning more about how we can stay safe during a fire. Next week students will have an opportunity to pick a natural disaster of their choice and begin the research process for their informational book and Public Service Announcement.
Gingerbread Houses
Next week, students will be participating in a class party to celebrate the Holidays. We will be making Gingerbread Houses, and participating in many other fun activities on Friday, December 20th. I would like to invite you to partake in the event by sending your child to school with supplies needed that can be shared by everyone. Please bring the following store-bought supplies by Thursday, December 19th.
