Reading
This week students had an opportunity to familiarize themselves with their reading environment. Students discussed silent reading norms, went over flexible seating expectations, and explored our classroom library where they shopped for multiple books to fill their book boxes. Our main area of focus this week was to build stamina while Mrs. Hauser met with students to assess where their "just right" reading levels were.
Writing
This week students were given a writing assessment in which their only directions were to tell Mrs. Hauser a story. Students only spent one writing session working on this piece, and were told that it was just an opportunity for Mrs. Hauser to see their writing skills. Next week, students will begin learning about narrative writing and we will jump right into Lucy Caulkins teaching curriculum.
Inquiry
This week we began our PYP unit of inquiry: Who We Are. The central idea of our unit is that people bring their cultural and personal beliefs to a community of learners. Students will be sent home with a homework assignment that involves talking to their families about what their values are. On Tuesday, the 24th students will bring in a picture of something that reflects one of their family values.
Back To School Night
Thank you so much to those that attended BTSN on Thursday! It was great getting to see so many familiar faces, and get an overview of what 4th grade is going to look like this year. I appreciate those of you who celebrated in my big announcement and if you missed it, please check your email or look under the News and Notes tab of the website. If you signed up to become a guest speaker or parent volunteer, I will be in contact with you soon, thank you for showing interest.
