Reading
This week, students began our first unit of study by focusing on our classroom reading culture. Students continued to read independently, and conference with Mrs. Hauser. We also had our first reading assessment in which students had to answer questions about character traits and theme, and then grade themselves by using a rubric.
Math
This week, we continued to focus on launching the math workshop by exploring different aspects of our learning! Students were taught the importance of asking questions, making mistakes, and discovering that there are multiple ways to solve a problem. Students asked questions, worked with partners, and tried to solve the unsolvable! We wrapped up our week by playing math games, and using our Chromebooks to check out platforms such as Dreambox, Zearn, and Prodigy.
Writing
This week, students began the brainstorming process for our new writing unit which focuses on realistic fiction. We drew maps of special memories from our past, and talked about how ordinary moments can often lead to some of the best stories. We also talked about the importance of writing stories that we wish existed, so on Wednesdays we'll be doing creative writing.
Inquiry
This week, we began our PYP unit of inquiry: Who We Are. On Monday, students were introduced to the theme and central idea, where they broke down the meaning of the two concepts, and wrote them down in their own words. For the reminder of the week, we spent time focusing on our values, both as individuals, and as a community of learners within our classroom.
Homework
This Tuesday, homework is due for the very first time. Last week, your child was sent home with a reading log, list of vocabulary words, and a values assignment in relation to our new PYP unit, Who We Are. Please remember that 4th grade students should be reading for at least 3 hours a week, and since comprehension is our main area of focus this year, a book chat should take place as well. Our vocabulary test, and values assignment share will take place on September 18th.
