Reading
This week, students were introduced to their new read aloud book “Refugee,” where they learned the backgrounds of three different characters who share very different experiences, but all have one thing in common. Josef is a 12 year old Jewish boy from Berlin, Germany living in the 1930s. Isabel is a` young girl living in the 1990s in Havana, Cuba, and Mahmoud’s story takes place during 2015 in Aleppo, Syria. Students also took a reading assessment this week in which they focused on summarizing two text about Ellis Island, and the inspection process once immigrants came to America. Mrs. Hauser will go over students assessments during parent/teacher conferences.
Math
This week, student’s practiced their knowledge of fractions by participating in a week long inquiry problem. This story problem was about submarine sandwiches, and splitting them amongst students on a field trip. Each pair of classmates had to determine whether or not the sandwich distribution was fair, and how much of a sandwich each student while on the field trip. Students created ratio tables, and used their knowledge of equivalent fractions to show their thinking.
Inquiry
This week, students continued working on where we are in place and time by sorting pictures of major migrations from the past such as Ellis and Angel island, The California Gold Rush, The Dust Bowl and Japanese Internment. Students also discussed the many different push and pull factors that caused someone to migrate in the first place. Students also had an opportunity to explore a traveling pioneer trunk, provided by the Oregon Historical Society, where they discovered many unique artifacts from the Oregon trail.
Next week’s math: Module 6- Decimals: Lessons 1-4
Next week’s vocabulary test: Corps of Discovery
Field Trip
On Tuesday, April 9th, we will be departing for Philip Foster Farms, and we are still in need of two parent chaperones. If you would like to join us, please reach out to Mrs. Hauser as soon as possible and remember that if volunteering, you must pass the Beaverton School District background check, and be willing to pay the $5 admission fee. We will be leaving at 9:00am, and returning to West TV by 2:00pm. Chaperones will need to bring their own lunch, and dress accordingly for an outdoor experience.
