January 8-12, 2018
Reading
This week, students have been focusing on non-fiction reading, and have made some great connections about text that can be found in other places throughout our daily lives aside from books (i.e. game directions, traffic signs, food ingredients on wrappers, magazines at the dentists office). We also spent the better half of our week reviewing text structures (description, sequence, compare and contrast, cause and effect, problem/solution), in order to help us become better non-fiction readers.
Math
This week, students have been learning about multiples and factors. While it is essential that they learn these two concepts in order to help them in the future with fractions, we have been focusing on skip counting, and multiplication in order to help us have a better understanding of prime and composite numbers. Students learned that a prime number is any number that only has two factors (one and itself) and a composite number has more.
Inquiry
This week, students were introduced to the acronym M.E.L.T.S, which was used to help them remember the five different types of energy that we are focusing on in our new PYP unit (Mechanical, Electrical, Light, Thermal, and Sound). Students participated in multiple jigsaw reading and note taking strategies, and completed three different science experiments to explore mechanical (marshmallow catapults), electrical (circuit building), and light energy (prism detecting). Next week will be looking at thermal and sound energy to continue our research!
WANTED
In class, we will be using creativity to learning about energy, and we need your help, by way of donations! In order to make our current PYP unit a success, we are looking for any of the following items:
-Small Sheets of cardboard
-Alumni foil
-Origami paper
-3V lithium coin cell batteries (CR 2032)
-Used magazines
-Duct tape
-Pliers/Wire cutters
Thank you for your time, and continued support! Please have your items sent in as soon as possible, as we will be starting to use them on Monday, January 22nd
