Math
This week, students continued working on their place value unit in which they focused on the standard algorithm of multi-digit addition and subtraction problems. Students also worked on breaking apart multi-step story problems using the CUBES method (circle important numbers and units, underline the question, box the action, eliminate and evaluate unimportant information, and solve the problem using numbers and visuals).
Writing
This week, students continued working on their realistic fiction stories by focusing on story endings. Students were encouraged to think deeply about the last few sentences of their story and how important it is to leave their readers with no unanswered questions. Students reflected on boring endings like The End, I hope you liked my story, and Bye, and looked at examples of well written endings in mentor text. Next week, students will be introduced to good docs, and begin typing their stories.
Inquiry
This week, students completed their very first unit of inquiry: Who We Are. Students finished up their collages by writing detailed artist statements that represented their values, community, and culture. They also shared their artwork on Seesaw, and with the other 4th grade classes by doing a giant gallery walk where students commented on what they saw, thought and wondered about each others work. We ended the week by completing a self reflection, and by sharing what types of actions we may want to partake in the future during a community circle. Next week, we dive deep into our brand new unit: How We Express Ourselves.
Parent/Teacher Conferences
In two weeks, Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on October 24th-26th. For your convenience, we will be signing up for conferences through a website called PTCfast-https://www.smore.com/buva7 .
