This week, students were given the opportunity to collaborate with their peers in choosing a book for their new book clubs. Students created joint calendars, and set a pacing guide that will determine when they complete their book by. Students will be meeting frequently to discuss their books, and have chosen a variety of genres and authors, so make sure to check in, and ask them what book they are currently reading!
Math
This week, students continued working on their new math module which focuses on fractions. Students worked on finding equivalent fractions using both multiplication and division, as well as comparing greater than, less than, and equal to numbers. Students also practiced the skill of placing fractions on a number line using their knowledge of benchmarks such as 0, 1/2, and 1, and next week we will work on converting improper fractions into mixed numbers.
Inquiry
This week, students continued working on our new PYP unit, which is How We Organize Ourselves. Our central idea targets how community values influence leaders and impact decision making. Students learned about Oregon Statehood and were able to identify the three different types of government. Student can now identify the executive, legislative, and judicial branches, as well as the difference between a bill and a law. Next week, students will take a closer look at some past and present bills within our Oregon State government, and will research out current sessions agenda.
Next week’s math: Fractions pre-test, EGNY Module 5 Lessons 13- 17
Next week’s vocabulary test: Fractions
Valentine's Day
This week, Students were sent home with a list of classmates names in order to create valentine's day cards (if they so choose). The expectations in relation to valentine's are that if your child plans on bring them, they must bring one valentine for each classmate. If they are going to include a treat with their card, it must also be store bought and not homemade. If your child would like to create a valentine's day box for the party, they need to do it on their own time as we will not be spending any class time to create them. Boxes may be brought in on Thursday, and will be sent home after the valentine's day party which will take place on Thursday, February 14 from 2:00-3:00pm.
Paved Path Project
Last year the West TV staff and parents came together through surveys and focus groups and determined overwhelmingly that funding our Paved Path Project was a community priority! This enthusiastic input shaped our goal of transforming our often-soggy bark chip path into a six-foot-wide paved path that is accessible to ALL students and community members. We need your support to make this goal a reality! Please purchase a pair of West TV spirit socks for $14.00 here.
